Girls

Hordes of gorgeous tourist girls flock here to dive and party. Japanese and American girls are particularly fond of Cairns. It is probably the best place in the country to pick up. The nightlife here is incredible for a town of this size, not sophisticated but lots of fun. Local girls here are much friendlier than other parts of the country. Transport

Cairns is a good city for walking. If you want to see the tourist spots out of the city you might need a car. There is a decent bus service from Sunbus which costs about $4.60 per day and services most parts of town including the northern beaches. Sunbus is a hail and ride service.

Airport

Small airport that has mainly domestic flights but some from Asia, NZ & the Pacific as well. There is an Airport Connect bus which links to the nearest public bus stop for $6. From there you can get a bus into Cairns proper for $2.20. Otherwise uber or the shuttle provided by Sun Palm for $15 are the best options.

Nightlife
General

Cairns is a great town for nightlife. The big nights are Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Drinks are pretty cheap, $5 to $7. There are a few companies that run pub crawls. Service of alcohol stops at 3am. You'll probably have to pay cover on weekends. $5-10 usually.

Gilligans

The most popular bar in town. The "G Spot" is the place to be in Cairns. Music is garbage but drinks are cheap and there is a lot of talent. This is where you will probably end up no matter where you start your night. Upstairs is another nightclub called Attic which plays house music.

The Cotton Club

Fancy by Cairns standards. Has nice booths and tables.

The Woolshed

Popular backpacker bar similar to Gilligans. Cheap beers and plenty of talent. Good place to get dinner early in the night.

The Jack

Big British theme bar with hostel attached. Lots of different areas through the venue and a big dancefloor. Cheap drinks and food.

PJ OBriens

Cosy place with cheap meals and pool tables. Young crowd and a lot of English girls here.

Down Under Bar

Nice pool hall.

The Pier Bar

Big busy bar near the beach. Nice pizza here and they have bands sometimes. Busy on weekends.

Rattle N Hum

Big bar with plenty of space. Nice to sit out the back and have a beer. Pool tables and pizza. More expensive than other Cairns bars.

The Reef Casino Cairns

Open 7 days a week til late. Open 24hrs on the weekend this is the place to go when everything else is closed. They have a nightclub here called Velvet Underground. Can be very quiet here.

Attractions
Cairns Lagoon

Really nice salt water pool on the waterfront which is popular year round. The esplanade is a great place to hang out during the day.

Cairns Night Markets

Fun market selling souvenirs. Make sure you know what you are paying for before you get a massage here.

Tanks Arts Centre

Really cool gallery and theatre in the botanical gardens. Check their website for schedule (tanksartscentre.com/whats-on).

Crystal Cascades

A 1/2 hour walk from the carpark you will find a beautiful and popular swimming hole.

Northern Beaches

There are some nice beaches in the suburbs north of Cairns. Machans Beach is a beautiful quiet beach with a nice restaurant and great vibe in the area. Holloway's Beach is a beautiful palm lined beach great for a BBQ. Toilets and showers here if you want to camp and there is a market every 2nd Sunday. Walshs Pyramid

This is a pretty tough walk and will take at least 4 hours return. Beautiful views from the top of this unique mountain.

Cairns Wake Park

Cable towed wakeboarding from $39.

Bungy Jump Cairns

50m bungy and a big rope swing. Book online (ajhackett.com/cairns). You can package your bungy with other Cairns attractions.

Fitzroy Island

A return ferry ticket is $79. Camping on the island is managed through Fitzroy Island Resort. $36 per night. Great snorkelling and beautiful beaches. You can hire kayaks and paddleboards from the resort.

Kuranda

Beautiful village just out of Cairns. You can reach the town by an old fashioned railway or cable car. Nice markets here and the town is set on the Barron River and nearby is the beautiful Barron Falls.

Barron Gorge Rafting

White water rafting down the river here through Foaming Fury 1800 801 540 for $138 or Raging Thunder Adventures 07 4030 7990 for $145. Both companies arrange pick up from Cairns.

Rustys Market

Great market for meals and produce. Open on weekends.

Bagus Cafe

Really good Indonesian food at good prices.

Ganbaranba

Big bowls of ramen for $10-$15.

Apex Milk Bar

Big delicious hamburgers. On the pricey side but you get a lot for what you pay.

ManDo Restaurant

Plates of dumplings, Korean fried chicken and noodles in the Bolands Centre.

The Green Ant Cantina

Cool spot with great Mexican food, burgers and beers. They sometimes have gigs here.

Asylum Cairns

Infamous party hostel. Not clean or quiet but lots of fun. Staff are nice and the location is good.

Gilligans Backpacker Resort

Backpackers with huge bar attached. Great swimming pool.

Bohemia Resort

Close to the centre of Cairns with a great pool.

Great hostel with a nice swimming pool.
