Cool venue to hang out and talk. Good girls here on the weekend but it can be quiet on other nights.

Captain Melville

Pretty standard bar but it is open late and the bar upstairs often draws a big crowd later at night. Upstairs bar is The Loch & Key is hidden behind a bookshelf.

Asian Beer Cafe

$10 for a jug of beer. It draws a good crowd and a nice place if you can get a spot on the balcony. A lot of Asian girls here and students from the Uni next door.

Lounge

Unreliable but amazing at times. Cool music and a cool crowd. They are open late.

Baroq House

Hard to get in and it is super pretentious but there are plenty of gorgeous girls and some local celebrity types. You will have to dress up a bit and pay a cover charge up to $20.

Heartbreaker

This place is a bit pretentious but the music is good and it is open late.

Mendozas Social Club

Draws a lot of latinas on Fridays and Saturdays. More laid back on Friday and a party atmosphere on Saturday.

Classic Melbourne vibe. This is a good place to hang out but not to meet people.

Cookie/The Toff/Rooftop

3 venues in one building. A bit of an older crowd but there are lots of cool people. The rooftop is great and they often have movies nights. Can be hard to get in on the weekend. Good music.

Loop Project Space and Bar

Cool bar with lots of different things going on. Hipster vibe but friendly enough. There is a rooftop bar as well.

The George on Collins

Older crowd and a bit dressy but the girls are friendly and gorgeous. It is a place where you can have a conversation without shouting

Boney

Grungy hipster bar with a cool crowd and lots of live music.

The Carlton Club

Flashy but unpretentious bar over many levels and with a great rooftop. Great crowd and good music. One of Melbourne's best bars. Only downsides are overzealous bouncers and expensive drinks.

Spice Market

Fancy bar with lots of pretty girls. Lots of Asian girls here. Big dancefloor. The music is commercial house. It is always busy here so get in early.

CQ

Lots of girls here a mix of some corporate after work types and young partygoers. Really big bar and outdoor area. It can be hard to get into especially later in the night. Generic house music.

Turf Sports Bar

Big busy sports bar. Big night on Wednesday.

La Di Da

Big bar with a young crowd. Busy on the weekends.

The Bottom End

Cool place that often has good DJs. Great food here but it is overpriced.

New Guernica

Local and international DJs every week make this one of the best dance music venues in the country. Expect to pay for entry most nights as they have gigs all the time.

Cherry Bar

Legendary Melbourne rock bar. Great bands playing every night and great atmosphere in general. You might have to pay depending on the band. Great crowd and it stays open late.

The Joint Bar

Bar attached to a backpackers with cheap beers and a big crowd on the weekends. Bouncers are over the top and sometimes it is empty but it's worth checking especially late at night.

E55

Cool underground place with great music and a cool laid back vibe. Drink specials from Monday to Thursday.

Tramp

The name pretty much says it all. Hard to get in without paying a big cover charge. You will have a good time if you are not fussy. Crowd is very young.

Bond

For some reason this bar seems to attract more girls than guys especially early in the night. You need to dress up a bit to get in here.

Transport

Busy bar next to Fed Square. Lots of girls here, people are pretty friendly and you can hear yourself above the music. Easy to start conversations.

Arbory Bar

Pricey & pretentious this place is all about location. The location is great. Floating over the Yarra river right next to Flinders St station.

Alumbra

Huge fancy nightclub in Docklands. There is a cover charge up to $20 and you need to dress up to get in. Not much else around here but if it is busy this place is great and the girls are beautiful.

Attractions
Queen Victoria Market

Huge market selling almost everything. Sunday afternoon is a great time to come as they sell fruit and veg off cheap. During the winter there is a night market on Wednesday night. It is good fun though the food and drinks are a bit pricey. The day market is closed on Monday and Wednesday.

State Library of Victoria

Beautiful old building and a good spot to use the wifi or internet. Lots of girls hang out on the lawn out the front.

Melbourne City Baths

Beautiful pool in an old building.

Treasury Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens

Nice gardens to relax on a hot day.

MCG and Yarra Gardens

The biggest stadium in the country. It fills up sometimes for big cricket games and AFL games. The atmosphere is great during big games. Across the tracks is Melbourne Park where the Australian Open is held in January. The MCG is surrounded by Yarra Gardens which is a good place for a BBQ.

Great art gallery with Australian art.

Museum with Australian movies, animation and games.

Hosier Ln

Famous street art spot. Hosier Ln runs between Flinders St and Flinders Ln across the road from Fed Square.

Union Ln

Famous street art spot. Hosier Ln runs Bourke St Mall and Little Collins St.

AC/DC Ln and Duckboard Ln

Famous street art spot. Off Flinders Ln

Caledonian Lane

Famous street art spot. Between Lonsdale St and Little Bourke St.

Hardrock Climbing

Great rock climbing wall in the middle of the city.

Croft Alley

Famous street art spot. Off Little Bourke St. There is a good bar hidden away at the end.

A Melbourne institution. Delicious Japanese curries at a great price. Quick service and healthy food.

Om Vegetarian

$7.50 for all you can eat vegetarian food.

Crossways Food For Life

Delicious and generous servings of vegan Indian food.

Soi 38

Great Thai food. Everything on the menu is $10.

ShanDong MaMa

There are lots of great dumpling places in Chinatown. This is one of the best.

Lao-Luangprabang

Laotian Restaurant, big bowls of noodles and nice entrees. Decent prices.

Stalactites

Open 24 hours. Serves a good range of Greek food but most likely you will come here for giros late at night. Service and food are great.

Pellegrinis Espresso Bar

Cool old-fashioned Italian place with great food and coffee. Huge lasagne is the thing to get here.

Gami Chicken and Beer

Awesome Korean chicken place, there are a few through Melbourne but this is the original. Good place for big groups.

Shujinko

Izakaya style Japanese place open 24 hours. Great place for post drink feed.

Purple Peanuts

Nice sushi and Japanese style burgers.

Degraves Espresso Bar

Probably the most famous cafe in the country. It gets busy but the coffee is always good and the location is stereotypically Melbourne.

Shortstop Coffee and Donuts

Fresh baked donuts and decent coffee.

The Borek Bakehouse

Delicious, cheap Turkish food. Boreks, wraps and salads.

Supper Inn

Great Chinese food. Open late.

Dosa Corner

Great Indian food in the middle of the CBD. Dosas are really good and cheap. They have a special every afternoon.

Wonderbao

Cool place where they sell dumplings and delicious oversize baos (Chinese buns). Gets very busy.

Goz City

Best Gozlemes in town. They have a special on Tuesdays. Otherwise they cost about $11.

Big party hostel you can check in at any time and there is a good bar downstairs. Free rice and pasta.

Melbourne Central YHA

Really nice clean hostel. Reception open 24 hours and friendly staff.

United Backpackers

Clean hostel with free pancakes and lots of events and things going on.

Greenhouse Backpacker

Really nice place with free breakfast and a friendly social vibe.

Hostel close to Southern Cross Station. Free breakfast and luggage storage.
