Inner North


This part of town is full of hipsters. Lots of cool bars and good places to eat. This is a popular area for tourists who want to get a taste of the inner city Melbourne lifestyle.


There are a couple of big Unis here. Lots of Asian students around, particularly in the northern part of the CBD and southern Lygon St. The Uni of Melbourne campus and streets around it are great places to meet girls during semester. Great venue with an older crowd. Cool music here and they have a popular salsa night on Sundays.

The Old Bar

Friendly rock bar with great bands. Can be a little bit cliquey.

Bar Open

Another Fitzroy rock and roll staple. Usually the last place in Fitzroy to close so it draws a crowd late at night.

The Workers Club

Grungy student bar that is packed on Monday night and busy on the weekend. Lots of pretty hipster girls here.

The Evelyn

Expect big crowds here. People are drawn in by the cheap drinks and great live music.

Yah Yahs

A late night weekend bar that draws in a real hipster crowd. Friday and Saturday they are open til 5, Thursday is a gay night.


Open on the weekends they play 90s radio hits and the crowd is a bit strange. It seems to draw some pretty girls.

Cool beer garden with a trendy crowd. Some good food specials.

Famous rock bar with lots of big bands and a friendly vibe.


Big bar with a great crowd and lots of events. The weekends here are great. The crowd is friendly and cool.

Last Chance Rock and Roll Bar

Great bar with lots of live bands and cheap beers. Good rock DJs when there is no band and decent food. Draws a lot of backpackers.

Retreat Hotel

Legendary Melbourne music venue and beer garden. Friendly crowd and lots of different areas to hang out in.

Edinburgh Castle

Great Brunswick bar with lots of beers on tap and a great beer garden. Good place to chill and they have live music and trivia here.

Bimbo Deluxe

$4 for a pizza and the pizza is good. Beers are $6 and there is a good crowd every night. There was a fire here. It has been closed but should be re opening soon.

The Birmingham Hotel

Pretty standard pub but they have the best parmas in Melbourne. They are $22 each but well worth it. Cheaper on Monday and Tuesday.

Famous vegan tapas bar. On the pricey side but the food is very good and they have specials on Sunday.

Trippy Taco

Vegetarian Mexican food and a pretty good margarita. Hipster zone.

Moroccan Soup Bar

Come in and fill up some containers with delicious North African food. You can take them over the road to Edinburgh Gardens on a warm Sunday. Famous for their chickpea bake.

Popular place for kebabs and sit down Lebanese meals.

A1 Bakery

If you are in Brunswick this place is a must. Great bakery with cheap delicious pies and pizzas.

Melissas Cakes

Great cafe with decent prices. Obviously the cakes are the highlight here but you should also try the spanakopita.

Lentil as Anything

Set in the very interesting Abbotsford Convent. This is pay as you feel vegetarian restaurant.

Huge hostel in a quiet spot. Walking distance from town. Nice rooftop BBQ area

Relaxed atmosphere. This hostel is more suited to long termers.

Really cool place with cheap dorms and a friendly atmosphere. Very clean and has good facilities.

Higher prices here but it is quiet, clean and comfortable.

The Nunnery

Another expensive place but this is one of the best hostels in Australia. Great facilities friendly staff and very social atmosphere. Free breakfast and lots of events.

Home At The Mansion

Super clean hostel which is great in the winter but gets packed in the summer.
