Kangaroo Island is probably South Australia's best tourist spot. It is not always easy or affordable to travel around. Ferries to Kangaroo Island leave from Cape Jervis. Two companies run a service. Beaches
Island Beach

At the eastern edge of the island, a beautiful quiet beach. You will most likely have this beach all to yourself. Gentle waves and a beach that seems to go on forever.

Hanson Bay

The best surf spot on the Island. Huge swell and strong currents makes surfing at Hanson Bay quite dangerous. Recommended for experienced surfers only. Also a dangerous place to swim.

Vivonne Bay

The best beach on the island. In some ways it is the perfect beach. Great for swimming. Offers something for all levels of surfers and has a picturesque jetty for fishing. Beautiful.

Stokes Bay

A secluded beach on the North Coast facing the mainland. Stokes Bay has a nice natural pool and a long stretch of beautiful white sand. There is a little passage carved through the rock to a second hidden beach for more privacy.

Emu Bay

A stunning beach with beautiful white sand. You are allowed to drive your car onto the beach if you have a 4wd.

Pennington Bay

On the south coast of the island. Great spot for surfing. It is more suited to advanced surfers. The scenery is stunning and there is a good chance you will see whales and dolphins here.

Antechamber Bay

30 mins drive from Penneshaw is Lashmar Conservation Park. Here you will find beautiful Antechamber Bay. The beach feels very secluded and if you are lucky you will be the only one on it. A long stretch of sand and gentle waves.

Attractions
Seal Bay Conservation Park

See a huge colony of Australian sea lions. Watch them play. Nice boardwalk and lookout here. Good, if expensive, tours available.

Platypus Waterholes Walk

2 hours return If you are lucky and quiet you will spot some platypus at the waterholes here. Try late in the day or early morning. Lots of other wildlife on the walk.

Remarkable Rocks Walk

Short easy walk to the stunning Remarkable Rocks. Beautiful spot for photos. Come for sunset here. Lie on the warm rocks and enjoy the scenery.

Admirals Arch Walk

Another easy walk to a viewing platform. Watch the ocean through a huge rock arch. Bring your camera. This one is very nice around sunset. You can see plenty of seals basking on the rocks here.

Rocky River Hike

4 hrs one way. Gorgeous walk along this river. Better in winter or after rains. This trail is the first day’s hike of the five day Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail. Nice swimming holes along the track. You don't have to walk too far before you find a nice spot to swim.

Snake Lagoon Hike

2 hrs return. Popular walking track. It follows Rocky River out to the ocean. Great views through the valley and across the Southern Ocean.

KI Wilderness Trail

A five-day walk. If you are interested, but aren’t ready for long distance hiking, stay at Western Kangaroo Island Caravan Park. It offers campers the option of doing sections of the walk with daily drop-off and pick-up at designated locations. They will drop your pack off for you along with food and drinks, or return you to your campsite.

Cape Gantheaume Coastal Trek

2 days one way. Wild hike along the coast. Make sure you are prepared for this and share your plans with the rangers. You will reach Cape Gantheaume after two days of walking. It is an isolated pristine beach with plenty of seals.

Hanson Bay Hike

6-7 hours return. Spectacular trail from Kelly Hill Visitor Centre to Hanson Bay. Lots of different terrain. You won't need a pass to walk this trail.

Waterfall Creek Hike

2 hours return. A quiet track to the Billy Goat Waterfall. The waterfall only flows during winter or after rains.

Little Sahara

$37 per hour to hire a sandboard. Sliding down the massive sand dunes here is fun. It takes an effort to make it back to the top of the dunes each time.

Kelly Hill Caves

The standard tour will take you through a beautiful limestone cave. The adventure tour has a few tight crawl throughs.

Food
Kangaroo Island Fresh Seafoods

Pretty good fish and chips, though like everything else on the island it isn't cheap.

KI Tru Thai

This place feels special. You can get a taste of island life. It is only open Thursday and Saturday. Decent Thai food and they sometimes have live music.

The River Deck Cafe

Nice spot by the river with friendly staff, good coffee and snacks. Great views. Beers are surprisingly cheap.

Accommodation
Camping

Campsites on the island are $17 per night and self registering. There are plenty of them around the island.

American River Campground

Nice campground run by the council with a view over the harbour.

Snake Lagoon Campground

In Flinders Chase National Park. Follow the signs that lead you to Snake Lagoon for about 9km after the Information Centre to the campground.

Browns Beach Campground

Beautiful campground next to Browns Beach. Very secluded area near the ferry drop off.

Emu Bay Campground

Short walk to the town and the beach. Very accessible campground with great facilities.

Vivonne Bay Campground

Campground walking distance from Vivonne Bay. What more could you want. There is a small shop down the road.

Western River Campground

Camping by the river a stone's throw from the white sandy beach. It is accessible from the camping ground by walking across the bridge.

Kangaroo Island Backpackers

The islands only hostel. Conveniently located near the ferry terminal. Single rooms are cheap.

The Western Kangaroo Island Caravan Park

Beautiful spot. They can arrange drop off and pick up if you want to do sections of the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail.
