There is a hail and ride local bus service in Byron Bay and the surrounding area that links Lismore, Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Ballina & Brunswick Heads for reasonable prices. The nearest train station is in Casino which is about 1 hours drive from Byron Bay. Buses from Coollangatta and Brisbane are easy to find and should cost around $40 one way.
Byron's beautiful main beach in the middle of town. The surf is smaller here and breaks close to shore but it is a great place for swimming and socialising. It is a bad idea to camp in your car in Byron Bay. There are a lot of rangers checking up and fining people. There are some good rest areas around Byron. The rest areas tend to not have facilities. If you go to Byron during the day you will find showers at the beach, BBQs and anything else you would need.
