Byron Bay

Info
Intro

Byron became famous as a hippy town and in a certain way it still reflects that. Today Byron is a busy beachside tourist town. The beach here is beautiful. It can be a good idea to book your accommodation ahead of time especially in the summer. When there is a major music festival here it is very hard to find a place to stay. Camping in your car is strictly policed in the urban areas here. The ..

Girls

Plenty of girls here along the main beach and in the town. Lots of boho hippy girls and gorgeous backpackers looking for a good time. At night there are some wild backpacker party bars and more relaxed parties along the beach. Byron Bay is a hub for major music festivals as well as smaller doofs. Weekends are bigger than other nights. With so many backpackers in the summer there is ... ... ...

Transport

There is a hail and ride local bus service in Byron Bay and the surrounding area that links Lismore, Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Ballina & Brunswick Heads for reasonable prices. The nearest train station is in Casino which is about 1 hours drive from Byron Bay. Buses from Coollangatta and Brisbane are easy to find and should cost around $40 one way.

Beaches
Byron Main

Byron's beautiful main beach in the middle of town. The surf is smaller here and breaks close to shore but it is a great place for swimming and socialising. There is a real party atmosphere when the sun starts to go down. You will get an idea of why people think Byron is so special. This is a great spot for snorkelling too. If you are lucky you can spot turtles here as well as dolphins and whal ..

The Pass

This is a revered Byron break. It tends to be very crowded and draws a lot of beginners due to its fame and wide slow rolling waves. It is an easy paddle out. Despite the crowds this is still an incredible spot to surf.

Wategos Beach

Beautiful beach just around from The Pass. Good break for longboarders. It is a hard paddle but worth it. The beach is a bit quieter here. For a really secluded spot walk over the eastern headland to Little Wategos beach.

Tallow Beach

Beautiful long beach with plenty of different breaks and big swells. It doesn't draw the crowds that other beaches here do.

Suffolk Park Beach

Local beach in the buzzing suburb of Suffolk Park. This beach is just south of Tallow's Beach and is a similar beach but is a bit busier.

Belongil Beach

Beautiful beach with the famous Wreck break at its eastern end. Can be hard to find a carpark. Its a nude beach in some areas with some strange types around.

Whites Beach

Not signposted but there is a carpark and you will probably see some other cars here. This is a secluded but popular spot. Beautiful white sand beach surrounded by forested hills.

Nightlife
Cheeky Monkeys

This bar has a young and crazy crowd. Lots of drinking games and cheap drinks before 9. You can get a very cheap dinner here.

The Beach Hotel

Packed bar with live music on the weekends, large crowds and cold beer. Tends to be standard cover bands and DJs playing top 40 hits.

The Railway Friendly Bar

The Rails is a cool local pub. You can relax here and shoot some pool. Tends to be an older crowd.

Byron Bay Brewery

Nice beer garden and plenty of live music and freshly brewed beers on tap. Wednesday is open mic night and Thursday is a popular hip hop night.

Great Northern Hotel

Great bar where the big bands play when they are coming through town. When there isn't a band playing it is still busy. Check the lineup to see who is playing (thenorthern.com.au/line-up).

The Beach

Plenty of parties along the main beaches and often at the smaller beaches, especially Suffolk Park.

Jonson St

During the summer when the sun goes down the main street has a real party atmosphere. The street turns into a night market with plenty of buskers. Apex Park on Main Beach often has drummers and fire dancers.

Aquarius Backpackers Bar

Cheap meals, cheap drinks, lots of pretty backpackers. You can party all night. The tables are built for dancing on and they have party games to help you socialise and break the ice. Sometimes there is a line outside.

Woodys Surf Shack

Weird little party bar. Can be a lot of fun if you are here at the right time. Pop your head in to see what it is like.

Accommodation
General

It is a bad idea to camp in your car in Byron Bay. There are a lot of rangers checking up and fining people. There are some good rest areas around Byron. The rest areas tend to not have facilities. If you go to Byron during the day you will find showers at the beach, BBQs and anything else you would need.

Aquarius Backpackers Motel

Big party hostel right by the beach. Good bar and a free dinner with every night of accommodation.

Nomads Byron Bay

Big backpackers here with a spa pool and a BBQ. Cheaper if you book online (nomadsworld.com/australia/nomads-byron-bay).

This spot is a bit quieter and close to Bangalow and Byron Bay.

Tyagarah Rest Area
