Once a run-down industrial city, Newcastle is now an exciting little place. With great beaches, nightlife and a great vibe overall. Take care on the roads as people like to drive fast here and they are probably the worst drivers in the country.


Newcastle is a great place to meet the locals. Lots of students here and beautiful beach babes. Because there are few tourists here it is easy to seem exotic. Local guys are not the most sophisticated so many of the girls here are easily impressed. Newcastle is on the Sydney public transport network and uses the Opal card. There is a train line in inner Newcastle but some stations are currently closed. There is a fairly good bus network and a ferry to Stockton.

Newcastle Beach

Great surf beach a short walk from downtown Newcastle. There is a great ocean pool, volleyball courts and a cafe here.

Nobbys Beach

Safe patrolled beach good for beginner surfers. Great views from the lighthouse. Great Ocean Baths here. Good spot for sunbathing.

The Bogey Hole

Beautiful rockpool at the bottom of King Edward Park. A really private spot. Lots of sealife here so it is a good safe place to snorkel.

Bar Beach

Very busy but one of the best beaches in the country. Great view from the hill on the north side. A good walk starts there. Great surf and a good place to work on your tan.

Susan Gilmore

You can clamber down here from the Bar Beach Carpark. It is much quieter than Bar Beach and is a good place to chill out on the weekend.

Merewether Beach

Further south from Bar Beach, Merewether has great surf and a nice spot for a coffee at the southern end. The ocean pools are huge and good for swimming laps.

Dudley Beach

This beach is much quieter than other beaches in the city. Surrounded by forest, this is a great place for some peace and quiet. There is a blowhole and some rockpools here if you want to explore.

Redhead Beach

Beautiful surf beach. A long stretch of sand if you like space.


Newcastle has a strictly enforced lockout with no entry after 1:30am and all bars closing at 3:30am. Bigger bars get very busy around midnight and there can be long lines. You need to bear this in mind.

King Street Hotel

The best nightclub in Newcastle. Lots of different areas with 3 or 4 dancefloors and a good smoking area. This is definitely the place to be on Friday night and draws a lot of girls. Open Friday and Saturday til late and Sunday til midnight.

The Argyle

This place goes off and they have cheap drinks early in the night. Wednesday night is uni night and it is packed here.

Finnegans Hotel

Pretty dirty but good fun on Friday and Saturday. Good place to meet girls.

Honeysuckle Hotel

Nice bar. More of an upmarket crowd and not the most social place. Girls here are very good looking.

Cambridge Hotel

Great bar where lots of the bigger bands and artists that come into Newcastle play. Very friendly vibe here. Check their website for gigs (

CBD Hotel

There is a cool bar here and also a nightclub so you can have a few quiet beers early on and head into the club later at night to party.

Northern Star Hotel

Irish pub that has some good bands.

Kent Hotel

Busy pub in Hamilton. Worth popping your head into.

Beach Hotel

Beautiful spot by the beach. You can sit on the deck and have a beer with a view of the ocean. Sunday evening is very busy here.

Newcastle City Farmers Markets

Every Sunday At the Newcastle Showground Griffiths Rd Broadmeadow. Nice markets with great food. Great place to buy local wine.

Blackbutt Nature Reserve

Beautiful Nature reserve with some nice walks and a free zoo that has lots of native animals. Parking is expensive.

Stockton Beach

You can drive here or you can get a short ferry ride from Newcastle Wharf. Beautiful long beach to walk down. Good for fishing. Currents make it dangerous for swimming.

Saigon Feast

Great Vietnamese restaurant. Cheap and delicious food.

Rajs Corner

Nice Indian food here. Prices are good but its always busy.

Good Brother

Best coffee in town.

Newcastle Diggers

Nice pub food in the middle of downtown Newcastle. Cheap food and well priced drinks. $11 for lunch.


A bit pricey but a great location. Coffee and sandwiches overlooking the beach.

Newcastle YHA

Great location and friendly staff here.

Backpackers Newcastle

This place is a little way out of town but they have a pool and games. Sometimes have a free dinner. They do pick up and drop offs. Very nice showers.

Good location.

One of several cheap hotels in this area. Close to the highway.
