Moving on from Cairns

Port Douglas

A small resort style town with nice beaches. About an hour north of Cairns along the Captain Cook Hwy which is a beautiful drive. There are dive operators here and a couple of backpackers with bars attached. 4 mile beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in North Queensland.

Daintree National Park

Gorgeous ancient rainforest with plenty of walks and guided tours available. You can get a riverboat tour to see Crocs in their habitat.

Mossman Gorge

Beautiful swimming holes set in the tropical rainforest.

Cape Tribulation

Driving north from Port Douglas on the Mossman Daintree Rd you will need to get the ferry over the Daintree River to get here ($24 return). Beautiful, peaceful spot with incredible beaches and forest. A couple of backpacker places here with bars. You can hike up Mt Sorrow Ridge which is a great day walk.

Cape York and Torres Strait

Continue on north up Captain Cook Highway and then on to Peninsula Development Rd for a real adventure and a slice of the real Australia. Make sure you have a reliable 4wd with high clearance if you want to make this drive.

The Atherton Tablelands

Lots to see and do up here including camping and walking through Granite Gorge National Park. Swimming in Lake Eacham, Barrine or Tinaroo. The stunning Hypipamee crater. Beautiful waterfalls at Millaa Millaa and Millstream.

The Outback

Heading across the continent towards Darwin or inland is a real adventure. You will see parts of the country that most tourists never see. The Mungana Caves are gorgeous Limestone Caves along Burke Developmental Rd. Innot Hot Springs and Undara National park are tourist sites along National Highway 1.
